Realm of the Mad God has been covered elsewhere, but today (at the behest of a game designing/developing friend and old colleague) I dove in. I admit, it’s pretty fun and I didn’t expect it to be. It’s simple, well presented (the tutorial was very impressive, for what it is), and hits that 8-bit nostalgia note very well. Reminds me of Nintendo’s Ultima IV era, insofar as the mobs are drawn up. When your character dies he’s gone and you lose his stuff. I say that and you might have disturbing Diablo 1 flashbacks, but trust me: it’s nothing like that at all.
It’s free to play (you can pay to make it easier or pay for more character slots) and dying – while “permanent” -is really a non-issue. Go have a blast and think of it as Gauntlet meets Contra.
